Teeth Whitening

If you are looking to spruce up the appearance of your smile, teeth whitening is a great place to start. Professional teeth whitening is affordable and safe for most healthy patients and can improve the color of your teeth by up to eight shades, depending on how stained your teeth are.

If you have a special occasion on the horizon and want to look your best, professional teeth whitening will give you the boost your smile needs.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening

Many patients are tempted by the glowing marketing of whitening products in the toothpaste aisle of the supermarket or pharmacy. While you may achieve subtle improvements using store bought teeth whitening products, it will never compare to the dazzling results you can achieve with the help of your dentist.

Many commercial whitening products contain abrasive ingredients that cause sensitivity, and generic trays allow whitening gels to leak onto delicate gum tissue.

Talk to our Portland dentists, Dr. Clark Brinton and Dr. Paul E. Ortiz, before making a decision.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

For patients with a short timeline or who want instant results, in-office teeth whitening will give you a significantly brighter smile in about one hour. Our team will place a protective barrier on the gums and apply professional grade whitening gel on the teeth to bleach away stains for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

They will repeat the process several times in a single visit for a much brighter smile. Additionally, we will send you home with custom teeth whitening trays to continue your treatment at home or for periodic touch-ups.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Systems

For patients who prefer to save a little money, take-home teeth whitening will give you a significantly brighter smile in about 10 to 14 days of continuous use.

Your dentist will create custom teeth whitening trays and enough professional whitening gel to complete your treatment. You will only need to place a small amount of gel in each tooth area and wear your trays for 45 minutes to an hour at a time over the course of two weeks.

What about Sensitive Teeth?

The most common side effect of teeth whitening is teeth sensitivity. This is more common in patients who have gum recession, but it can affect anyone. If your teeth become sensitive, take a day off between treatments. If sensitivity keeps you from whitening your teeth, desensitizing gel or fluoride application will help make you more comfortable.

Teeth sensitivity is a temporary condition and will usually resolve on its own within a day or two.
